Further studying

On exploring more of myself/my art - I discovered areas I had not previously considered to explore. Areas I could expand and refine to create pieces that reflect my themes but also create experiences for the audience.
My writing will be included in my project as an expression of the unconscious and to emphasise elements of the human condition such as trauma and healing, separation and togetherness.
I want to explore the use of photography in my work possibly - even just mainly for documentation to see if it could work as a developing piece to project onto my pieces or to combine with my paintings.
The techniques I mainly focus on in painting is the excessive application of paint which I allow to half-dry then scrape off and add extra on afterwards. Movement of the paint is important in my work, the turbulent distribution of pattern and colour helps to form an atmosphere with my pieces and the textures formed express both organic elements as well as base layer to add more mediums on top.
The creation of layering is important to my work - the development of each layer seals in colours and markings from the last. The "human touch" is something I plan to create in my work - the roughness, the mistakes and errors, the "mess" that is created when people are involved. Artists such as Francis Bacon inspire my creation of this theme because of this involvement of human emotion in his pieces.
When using other mediums I am interested in the application of pastel over the top of paint because of the marking that can be created over thick oil paint textures. I also am interested in using thread in my work combined with either acrylic paint or oil - the thread will be pulled taunt to divide or "damage" particular sections of my work.
The structure of my pieces is often random, sometimes vaguely planned but often spontaneous. I want to refine my structuring techniques and work more on creating plans and more definition. I plan to do lots of developmental pieces on a smaller scale to work out what sort of areas of the human condition I want to express the most. I plan to create large scale pieces eventually towards the end of the project - I want majestic, expressive, large pieces that can be used to create an effect on the audience.

Exploration to determine my project direction

To help with defining my project I have been researching artists/art movements that fuel my interests and use similar techniques as myself. I have been reviewing my past interests in artists such as Anselm Kiefer but also looking at particular techniques that I want to hone in on.

I have found the beginning of my project to be a shaky start as I could not pin point what particular area I wanted to focus on as I am a mix media artist. But I know the themes I want to work with so it's just a case of exploring different ways I can express them and translate them into art form - with the help of research and development processes that I plan to do over the weekend.

The combination of mediums is something I am interested in doing - creating expressive/semi-narrative pieces that portray themes of unconscious expression, trauma and the human condition.
Some artist I looked at:

Jacqueline Humphries

Andro Wekua

This piece above I find really interesting because it is made up of separate pieces that form a larger one - this is a technique I could explore, working with different pieces that ultimately make up a larger piece. I find this interesting both aesthetically as well as conceptually. Looking at themes of the human condition and the separation of unique unconscious thought all combining together to form a "bigger picture" - strangely enough this relates to my own pagan beliefs, the perspective of being part of something greater than oneself and how all things (including thoughts/experiences) are linked - nothing is completely individual but universal in many ways.
Aesthetically, this could create an atmospheric piece that would connect with the audience - even consider projection of some sort on large scale pieces.

Beginning

I am now working on creating a basic concept for my level 6 project - I have vague ideas but mainly need to focus on what particular painting techniques I wish to work on so I can refine them.
I have been looking back on all the things that link together my previous artwork throughout my course - the main themes are organic and psychological concepts.

Key areas of development (description of how your work and ideas are to be developed from the modules in Level 5)

- I am going to refine my painting and mix media techniques I developed during level 5 to create combinations of materials – focusing on abstract techniques combining fragments of words/imagery/photography.
- I will continue the concepts I had previously found most effective in portraying my artistic interests but also combined with new theology. Throughout Level 5, I focused on two main themes reflecting organic concepts and psychology and I wish to further these themes through my third year. The theme I am going to convey is the concept of an inner world, the unconscious and elements of the human condition. But also refine the theme of organic aesthetics in my pieces through my painting methods. This theme overall reflects my interests as an artist and portrays themes that relate to my dissertation.

Processes / Materials / Workshops (outline appropriate practical and technical skills to be developed  in relation to the above)

- I will further my exploration of painting by using a range of techniques I have developed over the past two years:
I will refine my painting methods by creating more textured surfaces by adding additional materials - either particles or excessive amounts of paint; creating and destroying sections of my pieces by adding excessive amounts of paint and scraping it off to create “damaged” layers;
- I will further develop my mix media techniques by exploring combining fragments of imagery, illustrative sections and creative writing with painting.
- I am interested in refining my techniques of working over the top of my layers of paint using different mediums, such as pastels, ink etc.

Research (outline how all aspects of your contextual research might expand and develop in relation to your studio practice content.  This may be complementary to the final essay outline below)

My contextual research will develop from exploration of translating my themes through painting to more specifically the combinations of colour and shape/symbols that reflect particular areas of mentality.

Final Essay Proposal.  Indicate what the relationship is between the subject of your essay and your studio practice.

My essay subject and studio practice relate because of the exploration of psychology and the inner world/turmoil of the artist through contemporary art processes.
