Working with acetate layering

I have been looking into layering my imagery together - however when layered on the OHP screens the "thrown" image rarely shows the two layers clearly. I decided to manual layer the pieces on a light box to see the effects of the imagery layering.
I want to layer the pieces then document the effects and print these new layered images onto acetate to use as a new piece to project. I will experiment the effects of layering tomorrow when I set up another installation.

Some work more successfully than the others but I am going to work on more - considering using my Form collection on acetate to see how the use of bodies can be both engaging and work alongside the setting pieces to formulate a sense of narrative and make the work seem personal - yet also working on a common ground with the audience e.g. theme of vulnerability, body form, distress etc.

Installation creation

Surrounded (2014)

Setting up installation

I have been working more on furthering my installation and making it more immersive - I booked out the PS2 space and decided to work on setting up a "floating" piece made out of my screens and using invisible wire. I decided to work on making the piece more on an enclosure - thus I ended up forming a separate room-type piece.

This was the idea I had sketched out previously - working with frames to make a "cube" piece. However I think it works more successfully as fabric screens as the images are more free and less boxed-in as they would be with frames. I rejected the frame idea as it would make the pieces appear too much like story board frames and too restrictive for the projections to spill onto the other screens if I wished to do so.
I then set up my OHPs - I want the equipment to be a part of the work, they are included in the performance element of my practice (as I change the acetate pieces over time - idea for the end of year show!). Almost becoming the "story-teller" as the piece changes over time. I need to consider buying/acquiring better quality OHPs for this - although they worked well enough displayed on plinths, it was still difficult angling them as some were damaged slightly so that the images were off centre or slanted. It was a difficulty that I had to overcome and I had to swap the OHPs around a lot for the different images as some worked better in different sections for others.

LIT UP:

Artist Research: Douglas Gordon

I have been inspired by the structures of artists' work when forming my installation - in particular the work by Douglas Gordon, focusing on his projection pieces and the work using figures/faces. I am interested in create particular expression and forming an impression on the audience - something that captures the attention, fuels a sense of narrative and creates an immersive environment.

The use of screens is inspiring to me - I want to push my screen ideas further and create an engaging piece that represents narrative/layering/immersive space etc.
The use of layering images in the third piece is something I want to look into - it's engaging and frightening through the one image but solemn and calmer in the other. The combination works to create a sinister display.

Looking expressions and how I can use figure/face in my work - my pieces relate to my personal life/how I view and see the world.

This piece makes me think of different dimensions and ways I can possibly use mirrors to make my work more immersive and also how to extend images and objects in my installations.

I am interested in using written art in my work - my writing is personal to me and it is how I create my narratives and my world. I want to look into different ways I can explore the use of language and whether it can be included in the actual installations.

Working on second installation

Explorative piece using invisible wire/fishing wire and projection screens (made from the shower curtains that I used previously!)

Yesterday's Sandwich book - artist work

Looking at layering! One of my favourite books to just flick through :)

I am interested in the themes of sexuality along side the beautiful and intricate patterns and layering - this idea has got me thinking more about different photography series I want to work on. My work is personal but also I want it to be related to universally. Looking at both experience and consciousness (phenomenology exploration) as well as formulating the idea of a narrative I want to explore using bodies/form when combined with sceneries and the particular things I often include in my work e.g. chains/locks/barred wire - all related to how I view things and the specific images I want to use to affect the audience and create the immersive environment that will draw the viewers into my work.

Also the bottom image I am particularly interested in - the combination of image and writing is something I have always been interested in with my practice. I want to explore this more and more - working either literally on the pieces themselves or including additional writing along side the installations!!! :)

Working back projection

I rejected the idea of creating a frame/box type design to back project onto and then - with some help from discussions with technicians - decided to create screens for back projection using shower curtains!!
These work amazingly well as after shopping around I found cheap ones with the perfect thickness and size for my image projections. I started by stretching the screens across part of my studio space and then projecting behind them. Unfortunately the studio lighting affected the clarity of the images - I am going to move to the basement soon because it will be better for projecting as it is darker!

Artist - distorted photography

Artist: Nathalie Hervieux

I am interested in this artist's photography because of the use of surreal effects and distortion that makes the pieces so engaging - also the artist herself has included written works as content for her series which I am eager to do myself.

THere are many of her series that I am intrigued by - the main ones are ones that feature distortion with colour, layering and the notion of a narrative.

I want to work with my own pieces to bring the narrative further in - to immerse and engage with the audience through conceptual aspects that are shown through my pieces. This artist uses the figure a lot more than I do in my practice - however I find this useful to look at as I will continue to explore how figure/face/features can be engaging with the audience and work to fuel a narrative and develop a sense of intrigue in the audience - to make them want to explore more.

There is a well of desperation and of memory in her work - of human emotion and of turbulence but captured in a still moment. I am interested in expressing particular emotions through my projection pieces - to express concepts of my own personal world as well as emotional connections that will engage with the audience present in the installation - be it sinister, desperate, exciting, dramatic, melancholy, loving or confusing...anything to express and push further the themes of my practice.
