'Fragmented Anxiety' by Andy Harwood
"Brisbane artist Andy Harwood is opening up his gallery space,
Love Love Studio, and sharing his artwork with a new
exhibition, Fragmented Anxiety. Set against a framework of layered,
multi-coloured geometric shapes and loose brush strokes, it’s a puzzling and
personal perception of the struggles of human emotion."
I was drawn to this artist's work because of the fragemented elements - the sense of chaos and things falling out of our control. In some ways this expresses how I feel as an artist most of the time! That I cannot control things and yet with those fragemtned sections it can form a much larger and more formed piece - with powertful emotion.
My interest in expressing human emotion made these pieces particularly interesting to me - yet also just aesthetically the ideal of fragemted items become something larger and whole is an idea that I really want to express through my work.
Drawing away from the overly emotional, I am more interested in drawing in the audience to look upon my pieces with wonder and try to understand what layers are made up of which and what the work is trying to depict.
The personal and emotional sense can remain more personal and hidden - while the aesthetics/use of imagery and words can bring the audience into the space and help them connect with the work itself.
The use of colour is interesting - I link certain colours with emotions or memory but this artist has used fragmentation of all different colours which exemplifies the element of chaos and sheer panic. The explosion of shapes seems to reflect a breakdown of normality and structure - this is an interesting concept but I am more focused on how those fragements we have ourselves can form more togetherness. How mentality and lives are made up of fragements and held together by different things - often personal to the person themselves.
Even though I mainly want to express the theme of fragmentation - I am still interested in the elements of human involvement and distortion/dellusion. These I shall explore along side the development of my installation.
