Bruce Nauman 'Raw Materials' 2004; Tate publishing; London:
"...he can be relied upon to surprise and challenge his audience." page 7 (foreword)
This artist likes to invoke reactions in the audience - exploring the use of language in some of his work which I am particularly interested in playing around with to see what I can form.
'always bring the underlying ambiguities and contradictions of his subject matter to the surface.' p7
Communication is an important thing in Nauman's work - some of his work literally speaks to the audience in the form of audio pieces but I am interested in capturing that sense of communication through other forms of art, to explore ways that themes can be translated and digested by the audience and invoke a reaction.
Explore work/writing by Wittgenstein* "intense concentration during which he 'thought aloud,' asking a barrage of questions until a problem had been solved, or proved unsolvable or nonsensical.' 'the point where logic and language break down.'
'...communication that can take place 'between signals.' p9
'...testing the relationship between words, forms and their meanings.' p9
This artist's work is exactly what I am looking for in regards to inspiration. 'Nauman uses architecture as a metaphor for the human body, containers to be turned inside out.' p13
